As an overseas buyer or distributor considering sourcing a 20 HP screw air compressor from China, the most critical questions are often: What is the price range? And what configuration can you get for that money?
China is the global manufacturing hub for air compressors, and the 20 HP (15 kW) screw compressor is one of the highest-volume export models. Prices range from $900 to over $6,000 — and behind that gap lie entirely different product tiers and business logic.
Core Factors That Determine Screw Compressor Pricing
Air End: Equipment using imported or top-tier domestic brand air ends offers high machining precision, low internal leakage, and excellent energy efficiency. Standard air ends may have a lower upfront cost, but their long-term electricity consumption is significantly higher.
Motor Type (Fixed Speed vs. PM VSD): Traditional fixed-speed models are the most affordable. Permanent Magnet Variable Speed Drive (PM VSD) models cost about 20%–30% more, but they automatically adjust rotational speed based on actual air demand — typically recovering the price difference through electricity savings within 1–2 years.
System Integration (Bare Unit vs. All-in-One): A bare compressor is the lowest-priced option. However, a 4-in-1 integrated unit (compressor + air tank + refrigerated dryer + filters) saves installation space and piping costs, making it ideal for precision applications like laser cutting. Its price is typically 40%–60% higher than a bare unit.
Pressure Rating: Standard models are rated at 8 bar or 10 bar. For applications such as laser cutting assist gas, a 16 bar high-pressure model is required. Due to higher demands on the cylinder block and seals, the price increases noticeably.
Why Choose Chinese Manufacturing?
Mature Supply Chain: A highly localized ecosystem — from casting and precision machining to intelligent control systems — has significantly reduced manufacturing costs.
International Certifications: Mainstream factories are ISO 9001 certified, and export models generally comply with EU CE certification, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.
Flexible Customization: Support for global voltage requirements (e.g., 220V/60Hz, 415V/50Hz), custom colors, OEM branding, and other personalized needs.
Professional Sourcing Tips: Avoiding Common Pitfalls
When requesting quotes, don’t blindly chase the “lowest price.” Be sure to confirm the following key parameters with your supplier:
Free Air Delivery (FAD): Clarify whether the rated FAD is at 8 bar or 10 bar (20 HP typically delivers 1.8–2.3 m³/min).
Energy Efficiency & Noise: Confirm whether the unit meets China’s Grade 1 energy efficiency standard, and whether a high-quality soundproof enclosure keeps noise below 65 dB(A).
After-Sales Policy: Clarify the whole-machine warranty period (typically 1 year) and the warranty term for the core air end (premium manufacturers can offer up to 5 years).
A high-quality air compressor that runs reliably for ten years delivers far greater long-term value than the few hundred dollars saved at the time of purchase. Whether you are looking for a standard model suitable for local distribution or need an OEM custom solution, Chinese manufacturers can provide a complete solution.
