Cómo configurar el compresor de tornillo para la máquina de corte por láser CNC?

Running a CNC laser cutting machine requires not only software precision and a high-quality laser head, but also the right screw compressor for CNC laser cutting machine. Experts agree that air supply is a critical factor—performance often depends on whether your air compressor system is up to the task.

This guide will show you exactly how to set up a VFD screw compressor for laser machines, ensuring a consistent supply of stable, dry, and clean air for optimal cutting performance.

Why do CNC laser cutters need a screw compressor?

CNC laser cutting machines need high pressure compressed air to:

  • Blow away molten metal from the cutting surface
  • Keep optics and lenses free from dust
  • Cool down the laser head and protect electronics
  • Maintain clean, dry and oil-free air inside the machine

So, the screw compressors are preferred over piston compressors because they:

  • Deliver continuous airflow
  • Maintain stable pressure levels
  • Reduce pulsation and vibration
  • Operate quietly and efficiently

All of the above points are important to consider if you are running the machine at full capacity for hours. A VFD screw compressor offers better control, energy savings (up to 40%) and automatic load adjustments based on air demand.

Overview of DHH PM VFD screw air compressor

El DHH PM VFD screw air compressor is designed specifically for laser machines ranging from 10 to 15kW. This is a combined system, which means you will get the compressor, dryer, tank and filter line all assembled together.

Here’s what comes built-in:

  • 22 kW PM VFD screw compressor
  • 600 liter air receiver tank
  • Integrated refrigerated dryer
  • 6 stage filtration system
  • Touchscreen control panel

PM means permanent magnet motor and VFD means variable frequency drive that controls the motor speed.

It is a factory assembled compressor and you do not need to run separate pipes to multiple components. It saves your time and space.

Step by step screw compressor setup for CNC laser cutter

Choose the right location

The first thing you always have to look at is the location. It might sound obvious, but I have seen compressors placed in dusty corners, under mezzanines even next to laser beds and that’s a big no-go. You need to place your compressor on a flat and solid surface.

Here’s what you look for:

  • Leave at least one meter of space around the unit
  • A spot away from grinding dust, welding fumes, or heat sources
  • Ambient temp ideally between 5°C and 35°C
  • Make sure no direct sunlight or heat sources are nearby
  • There must be well ventilation because these units rely on airflow for cooling

Consejo: If your floor is prone to vibration, use rubber pads under the base.

Wire the electrical supply

This model runs on 400V, three-phase, 50Hz. Make sure your building supply matches. Check these things before switching anything on:

  • Use a dedicated MCB (Motor Circuit Breaker) and ELCB (Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker).
  • Install proper grounding
  • Avoid using extension cords or shared power lines
  • Cables must be rated for the load (22 kW units pull around 28 amps)
  • Always use a certified electrician for wiring.

Set pressure range on VFD controller

Now you’re ready to set up the smart controls. This DEHAHA compressor’s factory setting is 16 bar which works for 10-15kW laser systems. But always double check your laser machine’s manual before proceeding.

Use the touchscreen panel on the compressor to adjust the operating pressure. The interface is simple:

  1. Navigate to the pressure setting menu
  2. Set your cut-in and cut-out pressures if needed. Recommended settings:
  • Start pressure (cut-in): 13 bar
  • Stop pressure (cut-out): 16 bar
  1. Confirm the settings before saving

Also, go into the system settings and:

  • Enable auto shut-off after 5 minutes of idle time
  • Enable auto restart when pressure drops back below the cut-in value
  • Check alarm limits for temperature, overload, and oil levels

You’ll literally see the kW usage drop when your laser is idle.

Start the compressor

Once your settings are in place, and everything’s connected. Now, turn on the compressor and let it run for 2-3 minutes before activating the laser. This gives the system time to build up pressure and stabilize flow.

Observe the following:

  • Frequency gradually increases (e.g, 60 Hz → 120 Hz)
  • Power consumption rises from 5 kW to 13–14 kW as pressure builds
  • Pressure climbs to 1.6 MPa (16 bar) steadily
  • Compressor shuts down automatically on reaching cut-out pressure and restarts automatically when pressure drops.

On a normal startup, I usually see power reach 13–14 kW when the system nears full load. The airflow hits 2.4 m³/min and pressure stabilizes at 1.6 MPa exactly where it should be.

Tome nota: Use a clamp meter to check each phase. You should see consistent amperage across all lines.

Let the unit run until the system reaches the set cut-out pressure e.g, 16 bar. Then observe whether it shuts off automatically.

Run a laser cutting test

Turn on your CNC laser machine and start a dry cut. This allows you to test if the compressor can keep up with pressure demands during active operation.

During cutting, note these:

  • No drops in pressure during long cuts
  • Compressor should adjust speed based on airflow
  • No signs of moisture at the nozzle
  • Smooth and dry air even at high speeds
  • The compressor returns to idle when cutting pauses

Monitor air quality

This step is simple but important.

  1. Use a white cloth or sheet of paper
  2. Hold it under the air outlet from the laser head.
  3. Blow air for 30 seconds
  4. Check for oil stains, water droplets or dirt.

If the tissue stays dry and spotless then this test confirms that the filter system is sealed and functioning. Dew point is under control and air quality is suitable for laser optics

Tome nota: Use inline air quality sensors or visual inspection (paper test) for validation.

Routine maintenance guide

Even if your compressor runs flawlessly for the first few days, regular maintenance keeps the system healthy for a long time.

You should:

  • Check system pressure daily
  • Drain the tank condensate daily (or set automatic drain)
  • Check filter differential pressure weekly
  • Inspect air dryer temperature weekly
  • Test air quality at laser inlet weekly
  • Replace filters every 3000-6000 hours, or sooner if needed
  • Check pressure and current draw monthly
  • Clean intake vents, check all drain valves and verify grounding continuity monthly
  • Check V-belt tension, oil levels and bearing wear every quarter
  • Monitor the VFD panel for alerts or temperature spikes

Trust me, the 10 minutes you spend on routine checks will save you hours of lost production time later.

Troubleshooting common issues

Low pressure: Usually a leak or dirty filter.

Moisture in air: Dryer might not be functioning. Check for temperature and drain cycle.

Sobrecalentamiento: Most likely due to blocked cooling or lack of ventilation.

No start: Check power, breakers and controller.
