Difference between a screw & a normal compressor

One breaks down after a few hours. The other runs nonstop. That is the real world difference between a normal compressor and a screw compressor. Generally, when people say “normal compressor,” they mean piston-type or reciprocal compressors.

Factories use screw compressors for steady work. Small shops use piston models for short tasks. If you choose the wrong type, then this will affect your whole work. But understanding the difference between a screw compressor and a normal compressor helps you choose the right machine

Design

Design of any compressor changes how it works, how fast it delivers air and how long it lasts. Both the screw compressor and the normal compressor have unique structures.

Compresseur à vis

A compresseur d'air à vis rotatives uses two meshing rotors. These rotors turn in opposite directions. As they spin, air gets trapped between them and pushed through the machine. The design has no valves or pistons.

  • Rotors replace pistons.
  • Air moves smoothly through the system.
  • No intake or exhaust valves.

Normal Compressor

Normal compressors( piston/reciprocal compressors) use a piston and cylinder setup.

  • A piston moves up and down inside a cylinder.
  • Air enters through a valve when the piston goes down.
  • The piston moves up and compresses the air.

This design is older but still works well for small jobs. A reciprocal compressor is easy to understand and fix but not built for long hours of use.

Compression Mechanism

The way a compressor compresses air is called the compression mechanism. Screw and normal compressors use different methods.

Rotary Positive Displacement

Rotary screw air compressor uses rotary positive displacement. You get a steady and even increase in pressure.

  • Rotors turn and trap air between them.
  • As rotors spin, they reduce space for the air.
  • Pressure builds without stopping.

This method is quiet and smooth. This type is good for jobs that need constant air.

Reciprocating Positive Displacement

The normal compressor or reciprocal compressor uses pistons. This method is called reciprocating positive displacement.

  • The piston pulls in air on the downstroke.
  • On the upstroke, it compresses the air into a tank.
  • Air comes out in bursts.

This type creates more vibration. You need to replace pistons or cylinders more often. It works well for jobs that don’t need constant air like tire filling or power tools in short bursts.

Operating Principles

The way these compressors work over time affects their airflow and pressure. This is where you feel the difference most.

Continuous Compression

Screw compressors work with continuous compression.

  • The rotors spin non-stop.
  • Air enters and exits smoothly.
  • Pressure builds slowly and evenly.
  • No sudden jumps in pressure.
  • Perfect for automated production lines.

You get a gradual pressure increase and smooth airflow. That’s why you mostly see compresseurs à vis in large plants where machines run all day.

Intermittent Compression

Normal compressors use intermittent compression.

  • Air enters in cycles.
  • The piston moves, stops and repeats the cycle.
  • Pressure builds in steps.

You feel a cyclic pressure variation and the compressor starts and stops often.

Performance Comparison

Performance is also the most important factor to compare.

Higher Volumetric Efficiency

A screw air compressou offers higher volumetric efficiency.

  • More air in less time.
  • Less air leakage.
  • Better use of motor power.

Industries that run machines 24/7 benefit the most from them. Because they save more power and give more output.

Smoother Operation

Screw compressors run quietly and smoothly.

  • Fewer moving parts.
  • No back-and-forth motion.
  • Less vibration and noise.

You can place them near workers. This won’t disturb the work environment.

Lower Volumetric Efficiency

A normal or reciprocal compressor has lower volumetric efficiency.

  • Piston gaps cause small leaks.
  • Heat loss reduces performance.
  • Air gets stored and not used right away.

This type wastes more energy especially in long jobs.

More Vibration and Noise

Pistons move back and forth. That creates more vibration and noise.

  • Not ideal for quiet work zones.
  • Needs more soundproofing or seperate room.
  • Vibrations can cause loose bolts and cracks.

Exigences de maintenance

Every machine needs care. But not all compressors need the same kind of service. Maintenance is easier for some and harder for others.

Regular Oil Changes

Oil-lubricated screw compressors need regular oil changes. As oil cools the rotors and seals small gaps. Change oil based on run time, not just months. Most rotary air compressors have a built-in oil system. Also, oil free screw compressors are available in the market.

Reciprocating compressors also use oil, but it’s often separate and needs checking more often.

Rotor Clearance Adjustment

Screw compressors need rotor clearance adjustment.

  • The space between rotors must stay tight.
  • More gaps means lower pressure.

You must inspect rotor spacing often in industrial compressors. Technicians use feeler gauges or laser tools for this.

Periodic Overhaul

Both types need a periodic overhaul.

  • Replace worn-out seals.
  • Check valves and filters.
  • Clean all passages.

For rotary screw models, service time is longer but less often. Normal compressors need shorter intervals because pistons wear faster.

Piston/Cylinder Replacement

Only normal compressors need piston/cylinder replacement often.

  • Piston rings wear out.
  • Cylinders get scratched or bent.
  • This reduces pressure and creates noise.

You might need to replace pistons every few thousand hours. Air compressor companies sometimes offer rebuild kits for this.

Réflexions finales

You now know the basic design, working style, performance and maintenance needs of each type. Still, ask yourself before buying any type:

  • Do I need air all day or just sometimes?
  • Do I care about noise and vibration?
  • How much am I ready to spend on maintenance?

The best choice depends on how you plan to use it.
