Quelle est la pression nécessaire pour la découpe laser à l'azote ?

Do you know why laser cutting with the wrong nitrogen pressure can damage your metal parts? Because it usually happens when nitrogen pressure is too low or too high.

Nitrogen pressure directly affects cut quality, edge smoothness and speed. If it is not correct, the metal can burn, leave dross or slow down the cutting process. The pressure must match the material type, thickness and nozzle size. To get clean results, you need a nitrogen compressor that delivers stable pressure. In some cases, people also try using the air compressor for laser cutting machines.

In this article you will read about what pressure levels work for different materials, how material thickness changes the pressure needed and much more.

Role of Nitrogen Pressure in Laser Cutting Performance

Nitrogen acts as an assist gas in laser cutting. It blows away the molten metal from the cut area. It does not react with the material and produces clean, accurate and oxidation-free cuts.

The pressure of the nitrogen matters a lot. When the gas comes out at high pressure, it quickly clears out the molten material. This prevents build-up and helps the beam go through the material smoothly. It also reduces the chance of dross and leaves a better edge.

High pressure also cools the cut area quickly. This reduces heat damage and keeps the edge narrow. In short, pressure helps control how the laser beam interacts with the material. It supports better energy focus, faster cutting, and higher quality edges.

Standard Pressure Ranges by Material Type and Thickness

Each material needs its own pressure level. Thin materials need less pressure. Thick ones need more to push the molten metal out of a deeper cut.

Below are common values used in real shops.

Material Type Thickness (mm) Typical Pressure (bar)
Stainless Steel 1 8–10
Stainless Steel 3 12–16
Stainless Steel 10 18–22
Aluminum 2 10–12
Aluminum 8 18–20

These numbers are average values. The real need may change depending on the nozzle, machine power and gas purity.

If you try to cut thick material with low pressure, the gas may not clear the cut fast enough. This will lead to rough edges, burns or even failed cuts.

Some machines may even use up to 22 bar for thick stainless steel around 10–12 mm. The higher the pressure, the better it works on thicker and harder materials. But pressure must match the material and the nozzle size to avoid wasting gas.

Influence of Nozzle Diameter and Design on Pressure Requirements

The diameter of the nozzle affects how much gas flows and how much the pressure needs. A small nozzle makes the gas come out fast even at low pressure. A big nozzle needs more pressure to reach the same speed.

Par exemple :

  • A 1.0 mm nozzle may work well with 10 bar.
  • A 2.5 mm nozzle may need 20 bar for the same force.
  • A 2.0 mm nozzle may need 16 bar or more to keep the same cutting quality.

The nozzle must also match the beam size. If the nozzle is too wide, gas spreads too much. If it is too small, it can choke the flow and reduce pressure.

The nozzle shape also matters. Conical or double-cone nozzles guide the gas better and allow cleaner cuts at lower pressures. Wrong nozzle choice mostly causes pressure loss. This reduces cutting quality even if the nitrogen compressor gives the correct output.

Compressor Requirements to Maintain Stable Nitrogen Pressure

A nitrogen compressor must be powerful enough to deliver the needed pressure and flow. Laser cutting machines mostly need between 20 and 30 bar for stainless steel or aluminum. The flow rate also matters. A basic machine may need 500 L/min. A high-speed system may require over 1,000 L/min.

The nitrogen compressor must have a large storage tank to handle flow drops and high duty cycle to support long cuts. Laser generators have a proper cooling system to avoid overheating.

Oil-free compressors are better for cutting. They prevent oil contamination and keep the gas clean. Lubricated compressors may be cheaper, but they need more maintenance and filtering.

Flow rate is measured in Nm³/h ou L/min. Pressure is measured in bar ou PSI. Always check that your nitrogen compressor can handle both the pressure and flow required by your laser machine.

Pressure Stabilization Techniques During Continuous Cutting

During long cuts or fast cycles, pressure must stay steady.Even small leaks in hoses or joints can drop pressure. The machine must keep pressure and flow consistent from start to finish. This is done using regulators, valves, and sensors.

  • Regulators control how much pressure goes to the nozzle.
  • Sensors check if the flow is steady.
  • Valves adjust the gas as needed.

If the tank starts running low or if the gas line gets blocked, the system can lose pressure. Some setups use a booster to maintain pressure during fast cuts. Others use large tanks to hold extra nitrogen.  The nitrogen compressor should also be placed close to the cutting machine to avoid pressure loss over long pipes.

Safety Protocols and Maintenance for High-Pressure Systems

High-pressure gas systems must follow strict safety rules. If pressure builds up too much, it can cause leaks or explosions. All systems should have safety parts in place. These include:

  • Relief valves to release excess pressure
  • Burst discs for emergency pressure release
  • Temperature control systems for tanks and hoses

Tanks and regulators should be checked regularly. Hoses must be inspected for cracks or leaks. Replace damaged parts instant.

Always follow safety standards like CE, ISO 23125 (laser machine safety) and ISO 9013 (cut quality standards) or PED. A nitrogen compressor must be installed in a ventilated and secure area. Workers must wear safety gear when checking high-pressure systems.

Résumé

Nitrogen pressure plays a direct role in the quality and speed of laser cutting. Studies show that over 70% of laser cutting operations now rely on nitrogen to stop metal from oxidizing and to keep edges shiny. You need a nitrogen compressor that gives steady pressure and enough flow for the material you’re cutting. When you set the pressure right, you get better cuts and can lower your gas and power use by up to 30%.
